Dr Shaz and the Duchess had a little chat with Prem Sahib in advance of his curatorial stint for Naked Boys Reading at Miranda Bar this month.
RUSH, LIQUID GOLD, KIX; I’ve actually titled work after all three! – Prem Sahib
PREM! It’s been an absolute age. I’m SO excited the Duchess finally got you wrangled in to curate for us. 24 May will be a FUCKING DAY TO REMEMBER.
When you initially told me what you were thinking about for a theme I was slightly terrified I was going to have to re-introduce the world to my SJP phase.
Why Sex and the City? What does this theme mean to you?
I can’t actually stand the television show, so really it’s about reclaiming the idea and bringing to light the various encounters, experiences and complexities that exist in the spaces we all inhabit, but are too often sidelined in mainstream narratives. It’s also a theme that relates a lot to my work as an artist.
Yes, I can see that. I remember so well your exhibition at the ICA! Your work has such an echoic effect – these objects and artefacts that remind us of embodied encounters with others/objects. Elizabeth Grosz calls these city/body relations “interfaces.” I can feel this interfacing in the texts you’ve chosen; how we use and are used by the city, its structures and its inhabitants. I’m so looking forward for our summer sweaty sexy boyz to get on stage!
Now for a personal question, Prem. Your top three poppers flavours?
RUSH, LIQUID GOLD, KIX- I’ve actually titled work after all three!
Easy to mind, easy to hand. What about your top three desert island discs?
Prem, other than the 24 May at Ace Hotel’s Miranda Bar, where can we catch YOU and YOUR work?
I’ll be presenting a new public work in Vauxhall Park on July 7th for Art Night. It’s a large maze-like structure that is based on the footprint of a typical new-build, one bedroom apartment, referencing the changing landscape of the local area. It also happens to be Pride weekend, so on the same night there will be Anal House Meltdown (the club night I co run with Eddie Peake [NBR alum] & George Henry Longly) around the corner at Bloc South.
See you soon!
